In 1953, Spain was about to launch in Cadix a replacement vessel to its aging Juan-Sebastian-de-Elcano.A commercial dispute over an unpaid war debt, changed the course of its ownership. The Crown of Spain offered Juan-de-Austria to Chile in exchange of a write off. Chile accepted the deal and after refitting the boat with a fourth mast, an extended bow section and increased sail area, she was renamed Esmeralda. She participated in many international tall ship meetings and once cruise the Thames upstream to London after removing part of the ballast.

She participated in the Tall Ships rendez-vous in Québec City in 2017
